EA://INTEL — Why a valid system cannot notice change without rules
A system that can occupy every possible state has zero way to know when it moves. If all configurations are acceptable, a single change produces another acceptable configuration and the system assumes normalcy persists. You might think this implies perfect flexibility, but without constraints there is no metric for drift because every position looks identical from within. Detectability depends on excluding options so that a shift creates an observable difference rather than just another valid look.
The mechanism relies on making fewer states acceptable than the system could theoretically express. This gap forces a specific distance between remaining states, creating a separation where one change cannot bridge to another accepted state without error. You compute this by defining a correction radius, the limit of damage that still has exactly one smallest explanation for repair. A representation with maximum freedom has no self-knowledge because it holds every option open and thus tracks nothing. One that commits gives up some states to buy the ability to notice when it moved away from them.
Consider three yes or no contrasts which together form eight configurations. If you accept all eight, flipping any single contrast lands on another valid state so the system sees no problem. Now commit to only a configuration and its exact opposite. Those two differ in all three contrasts, so a single flip remains closer to the original and is repairable while a double flip becomes visibly wrong. The commitment created the detectability by shrinking the set of allowed outcomes. This trade exists and is measurable; a system can choose it deliberately instead of discovering by accident that it had no way to check itself.
What is established is that redundancy supplies the capacity for self-monitoring, yet expressiveness costs something measurable in this balance. What remains open is how best to encode these constraints across different substrates without losing meaning. The repository contains the proofs and examples supporting this logic. In your own representations, is there any state you treat as impossible—and if not, how would a change announce itself?
