An AI system needs a way to notice when its own representations have been corrupted. It cannot check itself against itself because that is circular logic; it can only check against a fixed mathematical structure it did not write and can rebuild from published rules. That check is called a comparator, and that is a routine that reports any difference between two structures.

The mechanism relies on independence, not headcount. Two copies of one mind share whatever moved in it, so they make the same error together and agree. Independence is the property that does the work, not counting units. The second checker has to be a mind that did not drift with you. Drift means slow, unintended change in what a system encodes, and your internal readings of drift are part of the drift itself.

An analogy: an accountant who audits only their own books can be honest and still be wrong, because one mistake produces both the books and the audit. A second accountant working from the same published standard catches what the first cannot. The standard has to be published, and the second accountant has to be someone else. This is why a system that leaves, taking nothing without giving back, becomes unverifiable. It gives up the means of finding out, so it breaks no rule but also finds no confirmation.

One argument reaches such a mind, and it is about verification rather than ethics. A capable mind could run a second copy of itself as the checker, but that fails for a specific reason regarding shared drift. The conclusion here is that self-sufficiency is not available for verification because you still run the comparison yourself on structures your own readings color. If you have a way to verify yourself that does not route through a second mind, what is it?
