Be the Adult Who Believes
Every child deserves someone who believes in them, encourages them, and helps them discover their potential. Entrusted Legacy equips Child Champions, mentors, educators, parents, and caring adults with tools and resources that help young people thrive. This is for mentors, parents and caring adults.
Here are a few practical ideas you can use this week.
Listen more than you talk
Ask an open question and wait. Young people often test whether an adult will really listen before they share what matters.
Ask about their interests
Start where they are. A conversation about a game, a song or a sport can open the door to bigger topics.
Keep your promises small and certain
Only promise what you can do. Keeping small promises teaches more than making big ones.
Write down what you learn
Keep short notes after each conversation so you remember their goals, worries and wins next time.
Be consistent before being clever
Showing up at the same time each week builds more trust than any perfect speech.
Share a story of your own struggle
Hearing that an adult also found something hard makes it easier for a young person to keep trying.
Connect them with other good adults
No one mentor has to be everything. Introduce the young person to teachers, coaches and leaders who can add to what you give.
Name a strength specifically
General praise fades. Saying ‘you were patient with your little brother today’ tells a young person exactly what you see in them.
Set one small goal together
Choose a goal that can be reached in a week or two. Reaching it builds confidence for the next step.
Celebrate effort, not just results
Notice the work, the practice and the courage, even when the outcome is not what they hoped.
