Bring Three Priorities to an IEP Meeting, Not Every Worry You Have

An IEP meeting cannot absorb every worry a parent has carried for a semester. The meeting covers present levels, goals, services, supports, placement, and progress measures. Parents are team members under IDEA, and the useful preparation is selective.

Before the meeting, build a thin file: current IEP, latest evaluation, progress reports, report cards, key emails, and any private reports you want considered. Ask for any draft the team expects to discuss. Choose three priorities.

Write concerns so they are usable. “Reading is hard” is true but weak. Better: name the task, the present result, and the effect on schoolwork or home life.

During the meeting, write decisions down as they happen. Afterward, compare your notes to the written IEP and follow up in writing on anything missing.
