Three Questions That Decide Whether Medicaid Will Pay for ABA

Before a family spends weeks on provider waitlists, three questions usually decide whether Medicaid will pay for ABA for one child.

1. Is the treatment medically necessary under this child’s records?
2. What does this state plan and managed-care contractor actually require for diagnosis, assessment, and prior authorization?
3. Is the provider in network for that contractor and accepting patients?

Medicaid can cover ABA for an eligible child. Coverage is not identical in every state. For members younger than 21, EPSDT is the federal starting point, but authorization still runs through the plan’s packet rules. A missing signature or outdated assessment can delay a request even when the benefit exists on paper.

An office that “accepts Medicaid” may still reject a particular managed-care plan or have no openings. Confirm both.
