OpenAI is already discontinuing its own AI browser ChatGPT Atlas

OpenAI will discontinue ChatGPT Atlas on August 9. The company announced the browser last October. ChatGPT’s creator wants to integrate its features into other products, including the browser in the new ChatGPT desktop app.

James Sun from the OpenAI product team announces the phase-out of Atlas on X. The company will share more information in the app and via email in the coming days. The browser in OpenAI’s new desktop app supports tabs, downloads, printing and authentication via passkeys, among other things. It also includes a password manager and autofill.

In addition, OpenAI is releasing a side panel for Chrome and a cloud browser for agents. “All of these capabilities are built on what we learned from Atlas users who took a leap of faith with a new browser.” In March, The Wall Street Journal wrote that OpenAI wanted to combine several programs, including Atlas, into a desktop app.

Chrome panel with file system access

According to Sun, the side panel in Chrome brings together the functions of ChatGPT and the programming tool Codex. The extension can view the entire context of the browser and has access to the local file system and installed plugins.

The cloud browser runs on OpenAI’s servers and allows agents to perform tasks remotely.
