How to accept Monero (XMR) without a KYC payment processor
- 1. View-only wallet + one subaddress per invoice
- 2. BTCPay Server + Monero plugin
- 3. MoneroPay
- 4. No server at all: payment proofs
- Pitfalls
You don’t need a custodial processor to take XMR. Pick the lightest option that fits your volume.
1. View-only wallet + one subaddress per invoice
Zero infrastructure. In Feather open your main wallet and choose Wallet → View-Only → Create view-only wallet, give it a name and save it. A view-only wallet holds your private view key but not the spend key, so it can see incoming payments but cannot spend them. Keep it on the machine where you track orders; keep the full wallet somewhere else.
For every order, generate a new subaddress (Receive tab) and give that one to the buyer. When money arrives, the subaddress tells you which order it belongs to. No memo field, no guessing based on amounts. Good for a handful of orders a day. After that, the manual matching gets tedious.
2. BTCPay Server + Monero plugin
If you already run (or want) a full checkout with invoices, a POS and e-commerce integrations, BTCPay Server supports Monero through the Monero plugin (v1.4.0 released October 2026). Install it from Server Settings → Manage Plugins. It needs a Monero node (your own monerod, or a remote node) plus monero-wallet-rpc. Per the plugin README, a single Monero wallet is shared by all stores on the server, so run separate servers if you need separate books. See the BTCPay docs for the Docker setup.
3. MoneroPay
MoneroPay is a standalone payment processor you host yourself. Your shop talks to it through a simple HTTP API to create receiving addresses and track incoming (and outgoing) payments. Good fit if you have your own backend and don’t want a full BTCPay install.
4. No server at all: payment proofs
For occasional sales, show your address and amount, and ask the buyer for the transaction ID and its tx key after paying. In monero-wallet-cli (any wallet open) run:
check_tx_key <txid> <txkey> <your address>
A matching key proves that amount was paid to your address in that transaction. Wait for confirmations before delivering. More detail: tx key vs tx proof.
Selling from a static page? Payment links and QR codes.
Pitfalls
- Confirmations: received XMR is locked for 10 blocks (about 20 minutes) before it can be spent. For digital goods, decide how many confirmations you wait for before delivering. 0-conf is a risk.
- Node trust: a remote node you don’t control can hide or delay transactions from you, and it sees your IP. For real volume, run your own node.
- Keys on servers: any internet-facing box (shop, BTCPay, MoneroPay) should hold the view key only, or a wallet with minimal funds. Sweep to a cold wallet regularly.
- Pricing: quote in XMR with a short expiry (e.g. 15-30 minutes) when prices are volatile.
Next: a Python script that watches payments with a view-only wallet.
