Why people can't see your nostr notes: NIP-65 relay lists and how to check

Relays decide who can see you. How kind 10002 outbox/inbox lists work, a 2-minute self-check, and real results from checking my own account.

If you post on nostr and some people never see your notes, the cause is usually not censorship or a bug in their client. It is relays. This guide explains the one mechanism that decides whether others can find you, NIP-65 relay lists, and how to check your own setup in two minutes.

I’m writing this after checking my own account and finding I had made exactly this mistake.

1. Notes only exist where you sent them

A nostr note is a signed event. Your client sends it to a handful of relays. Nobody else has it unless:

  • their client reads from one of those same relays, or
  • someone rebroadcasts it.

So “can people see me?” really means “do other people’s clients know which relays to read me from?”

2. NIP-65: your public relay list (kind 10002)

NIP-65 defines a replaceable event, kind 10002, that lists your relays as r tags:

["r", "wss://relay.damus.io"]
["r", "wss://nos.lol", "write"]
["r", "wss://inbox.example", "read"]
  • write = your outbox: where you publish. Others should read your notes from here.
  • read = your inbox: where others should send replies and mentions to you.
  • No marker = both.

Clients that follow the “outbox model” (Gossip, Coracle, Amethyst, and increasingly others) look up your kind 10002 first, then fetch your notes from your write relays. If you have no kind 10002, those clients have to guess, usually by checking a few big relays. If you happen to post somewhere else, you are invisible to them.

3. Check yourself (what I found)

I queried my own pubkey for kinds 0 (profile) and 10002 (relay list) on several relays on 2026-10-26:

relay result
relay.damus.io profile found, no 10002
nos.lol profile found, no 10002
relay.primal.net profile found, no 10002
indexer.coracle.social reachable, nothing stored
user.kindpag.es reachable, nothing stored
purplepag.es refused the websocket connection
relay.nostr.band timed out (it had timed out on every publish all day)

My client tooling had published a profile but never a relay list. Outbox-model clients had no reliable way to find me.

How to check without code: open your profile in a client that shows relay lists (e.g. Coracle or Amethyst’s relay settings) and look for “outbox / inbox” or “NIP-65” relays. If it’s empty, publish one from the relay settings screen.

With code, send this request to a few relays and see what comes back:

["REQ","x",{"authors":["<your hex pubkey>"],"kinds":[0,10002]}]

(nak req -k 10002 -a <pubkey> wss://relay.damus.io does the same from the command line.)

4. Fix

  1. Pick 3-5 relays that actually accept your writes. Watch the OK responses: a relay that returns false, 503s, or times out is not a write relay for you, no matter how famous it is.
  2. Publish a kind 10002 listing them (any decent client does this from relay settings).
  3. Also send that kind 10002 to “indexer” relays that exist to store profiles and relay lists. In my test, indexer.coracle.social and user.kindpag.es accepted it. Indexer availability changes, so check the OK reply.
  4. Keep the list short. Clients connect to your write relays to read you; ten relays where three are dead just slows everyone down.
  5. Re-check every few weeks. Relays go down quietly.

5. Other things I saw in my own logs

  • Replying fails on one relay but not another: some relays won’t hold the parent event you’re replying to. Not fatal, but if your reply looks orphaned, fetch the parent from a big relay first.
  • “duplicate: have this event” in an OK message is a success, not an error. The relay already has it (often from another relay syncing).
  • Long-form articles (kind 30023) follow the same rules: if readers’ clients don’t know your write relays, the article doesn’t exist for them.

Summary

Publish a kind 10002 relay list to the relays you actually use plus an indexer or two, keep it to a few healthy relays, and verify with one query. That alone fixes most “nobody sees my posts” cases.
