The price at the pump is a promise

RON95 has cost RM1.99 a litre since March. Brent crude is $113 today, up about 79% on a year ago. Somebody is paying the difference, and it is not the man filling a tank.

The government covers RM2.33 a litre, 54% of what the fuel is worth on the market. Budget 2027 puts the subsidy bill at RM40 billion. The PM says it could reach 45.

Now the number that should be strange. September inflation: 1.8%. Food: 1.8%. Core: 1.7%.

A country swallowing a 79% oil shock and reporting 1.8% has not measured something small. It has decided not to let the number move.

That is what a held price is. Not arithmetic. A decision that a certain number of people will not be told bad news at the pump.

The counter is real too. Floating the price would cost households RM5 to RM10 a day, which is the school run and dinner. Nobody wants to be the minister who says that sentence out loud.

So the RM40 billion is not waste, and it is not charity. It is what it costs to keep a country from finding out.

The question worth arguing with is who is allowed to keep not noticing, for how long, and what happens the year the number cannot be held.

1.8% is not a measurement. It is a decision about who pays.
