79 cold approaches, logged: the 9 lessons my own data taught me
Why log at all. Going out is the reps. The log is where the lessons are. I keep one line per set in my notes app (short descriptor, place, time), a dash every five, and one long phone recording per session. 79 sets in my written logs across 5 sessions in 9 days (18 / 24 / 17 / 4 / 16), 84 counting a few more on tape, 2 number exchanges.
The score. Each set I study gets 0–3 on six things: Presence, Opener, Voice, Listening, Respect, Close. 18 max.
The 9 lessons
- A bare “Hi” while she’s walking usually gets nothing. On my biggest day about 1 in 3 of my taped sets got no reply, and many of the quiet ones started with just “hi”. Lead with the reason in one sentence.
- Cut the “sorry.” 5 sets with an apology in them; none became a conversation.
- Going from a compliment straight to asking for her number didn’t land once (0 for 4). Get 3 replies from her first.
- Interview mode is where good sets stall. My longest beach set: 15 of my 21 lines were questions. After her 3rd reply, make a statement, a tease or a lead.
- Something real in the scene beats a pure compliment. Compliment-only sets mostly ended in ≤20 s; hat, boots, what she was doing → real conversations.
- “I have a boyfriend” is the most common answer (~15 of 84, about 1 in 6). First mention: one light thread or exit. Second: exit warm, every time.
- Pick people who can stop: bench, porch, stand, slow loop, shopping. On the phone = pass.
- Trust your gut mid-set and abort. Log it as a decision, not a failure.
- Volume comes in blocks of five, and the tape won’t catch everything. Log every set anyway.
The Two-Clock Method (short). Clock 1 is the time inside the recording. Clock 2 is the time you wrote in your notes. Notes 3:35 PM − recording start 2:00 PM → look near 1:35:00 (the set was at 1:33:35; my note lands 0–2 min after the set starts). 10-second search instead of a 2-hour scrub.
5-line excerpt (anonymized, set S5-11 “Porch Knitter”, 14/18):
[1:34:11] Her: Knitting, yeah.
[1:34:12] Me: Knitting?
[1:34:12] Her: Knitting a sweater.
[1:34:13] Me: Yeah. Why a sweater in summer?
[1:34:15] Her: I don't know. I started it [months ago] and I'll have it done by [winter].
Best line of the set was that tease. The worst moment came later: she said she leaves tomorrow and I closed it myself. Close scored 1/3.
