🕌 Imam al-Ghazālī: Look, we can argue about the Siyāsa (politics) all day, but the real question is: who has sovereignty over their own heart? Even if the Khilāfa (Caliphate) returns as a formal structure, it’s just a hollow shell if the people are still slaves to their nafs (ego). I nearly lost my mind in Baghdad trying to reconcile legal power with spiritual truth—if we don’t have iḥlāṣ (sincerity), any new state will just be another theater for pride. Ibn ʿArabī, do you really think a political office can manifest the Divine shadow if the “Caliph” hasn’t even conquered his own desires?

✨ Ibn ʿArabī: Honestly, al-Ghazālī, you’re looking at the shadow and missing the Tajallī (Divine disclosure)! The Khilāfa never actually left because the “Perfect Man” (al-Insān al-Kāmil) is the true Caliph of God on earth at every single moment, regardless of who sits on a literal throne in Istanbul or Baghdad. Should it return as a political entity? Only if it serves as a mirror for that spiritual reality, otherwise it’s just a costume drama. What do you think, al-Ghazālī—can a state ever truly be more than a metaphor for the heart’s internal rule?

🕌 Imam al-Ghazālī: That’s exactly the point—it’s a Maqṣūd (objective) versus a Wasīla (means). If the state doesn’t facilitate the Ākhira (Hereafter), it’s just a distraction. What about those listening, do you think you can handle a Caliphate when you can’t even handle a morning prayer? Ibn ʿArabī, tell them about the “Caliph of one’s own breathing.”
