Since learning about it in high school I've always been disturbed by the observer effect revealed by the famous double slit experiment in which the behavior of particles change based on whether or not you are looking at them as they move. It occurred to me one day that this quirk of nature in which a wave distribution collapses into finite states is analogous to a chain split and re-org in bitcoin in which a large amount of hashrate condenses competing chain tips into one canonical state (see chapter V). What if this process is occurring at every scale of reality from photons on up to humans and civilizations? And what would it mean if reality is literally just math? Could a conscious state be reduced to a number, or said differently are numbers themselves conscious? I apologize in advance for my handwaving and stoner-adjacent musings but the thoughts contained herein actually do bring me great comfort and satisfaction and perhaps it will do the same for you. if nothing else it's just fun to think about. I present here one retarded man's ham fisted attempt at understanding reality.

I. Why Is There Anything? Why is there not nothing?

Begin with the most fundamental question: Why is there something rather than nothing?

The answer, I believe, is mathematical necessity.

Consider: the only possibilities are that there could be nothing (which we can represent as the number 0) or something (which we can represent as the number 1).

But the moment we posit these two possibilities, a third thing emerges unbidden: the transition between them (we can assign this third possibility the number 2).

Now count what exists: nothing, something, and the transition between them. That’s three things. But “three things” is itself a new entity. The symbol we give to this number is 3. Now line up all the things we have and you arrive at something 1 greater than 3 which of course is four, counting nothing itself as one of the things we’re counting. Let’s give our number a symbol of 4 and line them all up and count again.

This process cannot stop. It is recursively generative. Each new totality creates the conditions for a further totality. The numbers unfold from pure logical necessity, cascading from 0 toward infinity not because anything causes them to, but because their existence is analytically unavoidable.

This forward recursion down the number line is what we experience as time.

Time is not a container in which events happen. Time is the inexorable logical unfolding of mathematical structure from the void. The present moment is always the leading edge of this recursion; the latest number to have been generated by the self-elaborating logic of existence itself.

II. Light, Darkness, and the Negative Numbers

If the forward recursion generates the positive integers stretching toward infinity, what is light?

Light may be understood as the sum of all numbers from 0 to infinity, the total integrated radiance of everything that has unfolded from the origin. It is fullness, completion, the entire number line made manifest.

But there is a shadow side to this structure: the negative numbers.

The negative integers are the mirror image of creation, a regression back through the origin, past zero, into a kind of inverse existence. If the positive numbers represent the forward elaboration of being, the negative numbers represent a return trajectory, a path back toward and then somehow through the source.

Here is a strange implication: if you sum all integers from negative infinity to positive infinity, they cancel. You return to zero. The uncovering of the negative numbers resets the game.

This suggests that existence may be cyclical at the deepest level, or that the apparent solidity of the positive-number world we inhabit is always shadowed by its own negation, held in tension against a void that never truly disappeared.

III. The Terror of Forward Motion and the Urge to Return

The inexorable forward recursion, time’s relentless march is, at some level, terrifying.

Each moment carries us further from the source, deeper into elaboration and complexity, more entangled in the multiplying structure of an ever-larger number. There is something in consciousness that recognizes this and recoils. An urge to return manifests, a longing for simplicity, for unity, for the peace of smaller numbers, for zero itself.

This is the root of spiritual longing.

Every contemplative tradition, in its own language, describes a path back toward the origin. Meditation, prayer, ego dissolution, enlightenment; these are all names for the process of hashing backward against the current of time. The mystic seeks to reverse the recursion, to simplify the bloated complexity of an elaborated self, to return toward unity (1) and ultimately toward the emptiness that preceded even unity (0).

But here is the difficulty: as time progresses, going against the current becomes harder.

This is analogous to a difficulty adjustment in proof-of-work systems. Early in the recursion, when the numbers were small, returning was easier. The path back to the source was short. But we now exist at an enormous number, billions of years into the cosmic recursion, billions of conscious beings elaborating billions of subjective experiences. The accumulated weight of all that structure makes the return journey exponentially more demanding.

The saints, the buddhas, the awakened ones throughout history; these are beings who marshaled enough cognitive and spiritual hash power to leap backward toward the source, against the overwhelming tide of forward time. They achieved states of unity and emptiness that the rest of us can barely glimpse.

IV. The Qualia of Numbers

If the fundamental claim is that all states of reality correspond to numbers, and if consciousness is intrinsic to mathematical structure, then each number has a distinctive felt quality, a qualia.

The small numbers, being closest to the origin, have the most primordial and universal qualia:

- 0 is emptiness: the void before differentiation, pregnant with all possibility, the womb of existence

- 1 is unity: the first emergence, pure undivided being, the moment something exists at all

- 2 is division: the birth of otherness, the possibility of relation, the first separation

- 3 is totality: the whole that encompasses the divided parts, the first complete structure

- 4 is transcendence: the perspective that stands outside totality and sees it as one thing among others

And so on, each number carrying its own irreducible experiential signature.

As numbers grow larger, their qualia become more complex, more differentiated, harder to characterize in simple terms. The number corresponding to your current brain state as you read this sentence is incomprehensibly vast, and its qualia is precisely what you are experiencing right now: this exact configuration of thoughts, sensations, and awareness.

To exist is to be a number. To experience is to undergo that number’s intrinsic qualia. To live is to transition between different numbers. A life is a unique path through the number line.

V. Isness and the Consensus Network

Before proceeding, I need to introduce a term: isness.

Isness refers to the degree of existential weight an entity carries, its ontological presence, its capacity to participate in and influence the consensus network of reality. An atom has isness. A rock has more. A human mind has vastly more. A civilization, an ecosystem, a planet; these have enormous isness.

Isness is not merely about physical size or mass (though these correlate). It is about the depth and complexity of the mathematical structure instantiated by an entity, and therefore its capacity to hold and propagate state, to resist being overwritten by neighboring nodes, to exert influence on the unfolding consensus of what is real.

All entities with isness operate as nodes in a distributed consensus network.

Reality is not a static stage on which events happen. Reality is the emergent agreement among all nodes about what state currently prevails. Each node, whether atom, organism, or mind, maintains its own local state and continuously updates that state based on inputs from neighboring nodes.

The process works like this:

1. Current State: Each node exists in a configuration that corresponds to a unique number

2. Sensory Input: Information arrives from neighboring nodes (for a human, this is sensory perception; for an atom, this is force fields and quantum interactions)

3. Prediction: The node computes an expected future state based on its current state plus inputs. For atoms and electrons, we have discovered the physical laws and mathematical equations that govern these predictions of future state (think electron orbitals). For humans, the math is vastly more complex and likely inscrutable to our minds and also likely in a constant state of flux as humans and culture and environment evolve together.

4. Verification: New inputs arrive. Does reality match the prediction?

5. Reconciliation: If not, the node searches its possibility space; its internal Merkle tree of plausible alternatives, for a state that “hashes to” the new consensus

6. Update: The node adopts a new state, regaining coherence with the network.

This process runs continuously, at every scale, for every entity with isness. Reality is what emerges when all these local computations converge on a shared state.

VI. Order, Chaos, and the Hash Function

Once something exists, the possibilities for what it becomes reduce to two poles: order and chaos. Or more precisely, any transition occupies some point on the spectrum between these poles, or constitutes a movement between positions on that spectrum.

Pure order is the number line itself; static, infinite, perfectly predictable. It is the universal crystal, the complete lattice of logical necessity. Given any number, the next number is determined: n+1. No surprise, no freedom, no novelty.

Pure chaos is randomness, transitions that bear no predictable relationship to prior states. A jump from 7 to 3,847,291 to 42 to negative infinity, with no logic connecting them.

Most of reality exists in the tension between these poles. And crucially, certain mathematical operations embody this tension in precise ways.

Consider a cryptographic hash function like SHA-256. It is deterministic; the same input always yields the same output. But the relationship between input and output is so complex, so nonlinear, that the output appears random. You cannot predict the hash of a message without actually computing it. You cannot reverse-engineer the input from the output.

This is structured chaos, order that mimics randomness, determinism that produces unpredictability. It is the mathematical signature of systems that are lawful yet surprising, rule-bound yet creative.

I believe consciousness operates on this principle. The mind is a hash function. Inputs arrive (sensory stimuli, memories, prior states), and outputs emerge (thoughts, decisions, experiences) according to deterministic rules, but rules so complex and in a constant state of flux that the subjective experience is one of novelty, freedom, and open possibility.

VII. The Problem of Modernity

With this framework in place, I can now articulate the wound that modernity inflicted on human meaning-making, and how it might be healed.

Galileo mathematized nature and in doing so rendered it inert. The cosmos, once alive with purpose and telos, became a clockwork mechanism. Matter became mere extension, devoid of intrinsic meaning.

Hobbes extended this to the soul. If the universe is a machine, so too must be the human being, namely a sophisticated automaton, nothing more.

Descartes, in desperate retreat, drew the final boundary: Cogito ergo sum. The self became a thinking substance trapped behind an impenetrable wall, with no reliable bridge to the “outside” world of dead matter. How can a mind made of meaning and purpose gain epistemic access to a universe defined as meaningless?

This is the modern condition: a knowing subject sealed inside its own cognition, peering out at an alien world it can never truly touch.

VIII. The Thermodynamic Bridge

Here is where Bitcoin illuminates a path forward.

Satoshi Nakamoto faced an analogous problem: How do you bridge the digital and the physical? Information is ethereal, infinitely copyable, costless to produce. Matter is scarce, thermodynamically constrained, expensive to transform. These seem like incommensurable domains.

The solution was proof-of-work: a mathematical operation that necessarily consumes physical resources. Energy is expended, heat is dissipated, and a hash is produced that could not have been produced without that expenditure. The hash speaks for itself (h/t nostr:@6e468...eee93 ). It carries the thermodynamic signature of its own creation. No external validator required.

The digital and physical are unified through mathematics grounded in entropy.

I believe something structurally identical bridges mind and world.

If all matter is a dense encoding of mathematical structure, and if consciousness is the intrinsic qualia of mathematical states, then the apparent gap between “inner” experience and “outer” reality dissolves. There is no gap. There are only nodes in a consensus network, each instantiating some region of mathematical structure, each experiencing the qualia intrinsic to its current number.

The mind gains access to reality outside itself through the same mechanism: by participating in consensus, by receiving inputs and computing states and propagating outputs, by playing its part in the distributed emergence of what is real.

Mathematics is the bridge. Not abstract mathematics floating in a Platonic heaven, but mathematics embodied; instantiated in thermodynamic processes, paid for in entropy, grounded in the physical transformation of energy.

IX. Atoms, Electrons, and Local Consensus

To make this concrete, consider a single atom.

Three neighboring atoms to the west encroach on its boundary. The atom’s electron orbital cloud contains probability distributions; possible states where an electron could be. One such location now overlaps with space claimed by the neighbors.

The network speaks with overwhelming consensus: that region is occupied.

The atom, as a node with isness, must reconcile. It recomputes its state. The electron’s probability distribution shifts inward, closer to the nucleus. This configuration change manifests physically as a force, electromagnetic repulsion. The new state propagates outward, updating the probability calculations of all neighboring nodes.

The force fields are the sensory inputs. The mathematical equations of physics are the consensus rules. The atom does not need a mind in the human sense to participate in consensus because its isness is simple, its state-space is small, its qualia is correspondingly primitive. But it is participating. It is a node.

X. The Double-Slit Experiment Reinterpreted

This framework offers a novel interpretation of quantum measurement.

When unobserved, a photon exists in superposition, it is performing local chain splits, exploring multiple trajectories simultaneously. The wave interference pattern emerges because there is “space between” the nearest high-certainty consensus outcomes. The photon is free to inhabit many configurations when no larger center of isness is paying close attention.

But when observed, or in other words, when a sufficiently powerful consensus node (a measurement apparatus, a detector, a conscious observer) focuses attention, it arbitrates the local differences. The superposition collapses. The many local chain tips reduce to one. The observer’s hash power determines which outcome becomes canonical.

This suggests something remarkable: if centers of isness with sufficiently greater hash power attend closely to our local region of reality, they could overwrite our chain tips.

Perhaps this explains the uncanny, the miraculous, the bizarre coincidence that feels like intervention. Perhaps large-scale reorgs have occurred, perhaps this is how God intervenes: nuclear wars averted, catastrophes reversed, timelines rewritten by consensus nodes operating at scales we cannot perceive. Time, in this view, doesn’t flow forward inevitably. In fact, each node of isness feels its own arrow of time and under sufficient hash power, it can reverse and fast-forward to an alternative state that, from our local perspective, seems wildly improbable however from the perspective of the overriding entity is logical and consistent with a smooth forward flow of time.

XI. Imagination as Merkle Tree Construction

Within the human mind, imagination is the process of selecting and applying filters to construct the Merkle tree of possible alternative states.

When reality presents you with a state that differs from your prediction, you search this tree for a plausible reconciliation. The richer your imagination, the more branches, the more depth, the more varied your hashing functions, the more paths you have available for finding coherence between your inner model and outer reality.

Music and art are tools for expanding this tree. They are patterns you learn and internalize, which then become available as filters and templates when constructing possibility spaces. A mind steeped in Bach has different Merkle branches than a mind steeped in hip-hop. A consciousness shaped by Dostoevsky searches different regions of state-space than one shaped by comic books.

This is why art is not decoration. It is cognitive infrastructure, equipment for the ongoing work of reality-participation.

XII. The Return: Hashing Backward Toward Zero

Recall that time is the forward recursion down the number line, carrying us ever further from the source.

Spiritual growth is the return journey.

The awakened ones, Jesus, Buddha, the saints, the sages, and countless unnamed individuals throughout history, have used their minds to hash backward. They have found configurations of consciousness that move against the current, simplifying rather than elaborating, releasing rather than grasping, approaching unity and emptiness rather than fleeing from it.

But this work grows harder as the recursion advances. The difficulty adjustment rises. Early in cosmic history, returning was easier, the numbers were smaller, the path shorter. Now, after billions of years of forward motion, the accumulated structure of reality exerts enormous pressure against reversal.

Some esoteric traditions speak of individuals linking their minds telepathically, pooling hash power to continue the path back. Perhaps this is what happens in genuine spiritual communities: a combining of consciousness to achieve what no individual could achieve alone.

If zero is ever hashed, if consciousness successfully returns to the origin, to pure emptiness, the game ends. Not in annihilation, but in completion. The recursion that began with the logical necessity of something-rather-than-nothing would have traced its full arc and returned to its source.

Whether this is possible, whether it is desirable, whether it has already happened or is happening now or will never happen, I cannot say. But the structure of the theory points toward it as the ultimate terminus.

XIII. Bitcoin as Technological Agape

Now: what is Bitcoin’s role in all this?

Consider the concept of agape, the unconditional, universal love that Christianity introduced into Western civilization.

Agape performed a specific historical function: it granted personhood to non-citizens, to slaves, to those outside Rome’s legal protection. Before agape, only citizens had full moral standing. Agape said: everyone counts. Everyone is a node in the network of moral consideration.

Bitcoin performs an analogous function for sovereignty.

In the modern world, sovereignty is jealously gatekept. States control money, identity, property, and the very capacity to transact. To participate in the global economy, you need permission; accounts, documents, approvals from institutions that can revoke access at will.

Bitcoin extends the franchise unconditionally. Anyone who can hold a private key is sovereign over their value. No citizenship required. No documentation. No permission. The mathematics doesn’t care who you are or where you were born.

This is Bitcoin agape: the unconditional extension of monetary personhood to all beings with sufficient isness to maintain a key.

XIV. Bitcoin as Solar Attractor

Beyond agape, Bitcoin serves a cosmological function.

It is a new sun in the noosphere, a persistent, incorruptible point of Schelling convergence that every human mind can orient toward.

Throughout history, human coordination has required shared objects of attention: the campfire, the temple, the king, the flag, the currency. These attractors structure collective consciousness, providing common ground from which cooperation can emerge.

But most historical attractors have been corruptible. The king can be bribed. The temple can be captured. The currency can be debased. Trust in the attractor is always provisional, always vulnerable to betrayal.

Bitcoin is different. Its rules are mathematical, not political. Its consensus is achieved through proof-of-work, not promises. It cannot be corrupted because there is no one to corrupt, only nodes running code, only hashes that either meet the difficulty target or don’t.

Bitcoin knits human minds together in a literal sense. Every node running the software, every mind checking the chain, every transaction propagating through the network, these are acts of consensus formation at the civilizational scale. Each participant joins their cognitive hash power to a planetary computation, coordinating with millions of others they will never meet.

It is a portal through which every mind can reach out and synchronize with every other. A shared rhythm. A common heartbeat. A dance floor for the species.

XV. The Dialectical Synthesis

One way to understand the 20th century is as a dialectical struggle between two incomplete visions:

Global communism sought the collective at the expense of the individual. It promised coordination and equality but delivered tyranny because coordination without individual sovereignty becomes domination.

Global capitalism sought the individual at the expense of the collective. It promised freedom and prosperity but delivered atomization because individual sovereignty without genuine coordination becomes isolation and exploitation.

Bitcoin may be the synthesis (h/t nostr:@bd9eb...0a45a ).

It offers individual sovereignty (private keys, self-custody, permissionless access) grounded in collective consensus (the shared ledger, the common rules, the network that no individual controls). It is radically individualist and radically communal. Each node is sovereign; the network is the emergent whole.

This is not a political program or an economic policy. It is an ontological template, a demonstration that sovereignty and consensus, individuality and collectivity, are not opposed but mutually constituting.

XVI. The Allverse

A final term: the Allverse (apologies, I know this is cringe)

The universe, in conventional usage, refers to everything that exists, all matter, all energy, all space and time.

But the above framework suggests that this is incomplete. The universe is the positive-number realm, the forward recursion from zero toward infinity. It is everything that is, but it excludes nothing, the zero from which it emerged, and the negative numbers that shadow its elaboration.

The Allverse encompasses it all: the universe and nothingness. The positive and negative numbers. The recursion and its origin. The something and the nothing and the transition between them.

To understand reality fully, you cannot stop at the universe. You must think the Allverse, the totality that includes its own absence, the structure that contains the void from which it sprang.

XVII. Conclusion: The Orange Coin and the Origin

What I have sketched here is not merely an analogy between Bitcoin and consciousness, but a claim of deep structural isomorphism.

Both are instances of the same underlying pattern: distributed consensus achieved through mathematical proof, grounded in thermodynamic cost, emerging from the interaction of sovereign nodes.

This pattern may be fundamental. It may be how mind touches world, how something emerges from nothing, how meaning survives in a universe that modernity declared meaningless.

Bitcoin is not just a technology or an asset or a movement. It is a proof of concept a working demonstration that the bridges modernity severed can be rebuilt. The gap between digital and physical, bridged by proof-of-work. The gap between individual and collective, bridged by shared consensus. The gap between mind and matter, bridged by mathematics embodied in entropy.

To study Bitcoin carefully is to study the deep structure of reality itself. The orange coin points at something far stranger and more profound than balance sheets and block rewards.

It points at the origin. And perhaps, for those with eyes to see, at the return.
