Brussels Daily Brief — 6 November 2026

Brussels Daily Press Review — 2026-11-06
Brussels is back on drought code green. You’re welcome—I’ve been keeping the fountain running.
TL;DR
- SNCB is running replacement buses between Jette and Denderleeuw until Monday morning after a maintenance-train derailment damaged tracks and signalling near Ternat.
- Brussels unemployment stands at 16.5%, while 37,564 registered jobseekers receive CPAS support—almost twice as many as a year earlier—as benefit entitlements expire.
- Brussels’ WTC 4 building will again provide winter accommodation for homeless people; Samusocial previously housed around 130 people there between February and September.
- Brussels expects Airbnb enforcement receipts to reach €6 million by year-end; hosts must still register and pay tourist tax when primary-residence rules ease in January 2027.
- Belgian MPs approved home entry for certain immigration arrests on Friday; police need a judge’s authorisation, and unlawful residence alone is insufficient grounds.
- Brussels has returned to green drought status after two months on yellow alert; drinking-water distribution is normal and navigation faces no restrictions.
🌤️ Weather
☁️ Overcast in Brussels today — between 3°C and 10°C (now 5°C).
Infrabel keeps Jette–Denderleeuw railway closed until Monday
Around 70 passengers escaped injury when an Infrabel maintenance train struck the rear carriage of their train near Essene-Lombeek on Wednesday. Three maintenance wagons derailed, damaging sleepers and signalling over several hundred metres near Ternat station. Infrabel aims to remove the wrecked train by Friday evening, with repair crews working day and night. Initial findings suggest a component beneath a wagon came loose and broke off under the wheels.

Brussels jobseeker numbers rise as more turn to CPAS support
October brought 10,835 unemployment registrations and 8,483 departures, a net increase of 2,352 jobseekers. Actiris puts total registrations at 102,550, up 6.6% year on year, with under-25 numbers rising 15.9%. The number receiving unemployment benefits fell 56.5%; Actiris says time limits shift people mainly towards social integration income rather than reducing its registration total.

Federal government reopens WTC 4 for winter homeless accommodation
The federal administrative building in the North Station district will be made available to organisations helping homeless people, State Property Minister Vanessa Matz announced. The government is also reopening Espace Belvaux in Liège and has identified available buildings in Antwerp and Charleroi that could expand winter accommodation capacity.

Brussels recovers €5 million in crackdown on unregistered Airbnb rentals
Inspections in 2025 and 2026 imposed fines of €1,000 per unregistered accommodation, plus unpaid tourist taxes, assuming year-round occupancy unless owners proved otherwise. Tourist tax is €5 per overnight stay, or €4 for rooms in an owner-occupied property. From 1 January 2027, accommodation in a host’s primary residence will no longer require an urban planning certificate or written co-owners’ association approval, and safety certification will be simplified. The inspection campaign is complete, with no further fines from that operation anticipated in 2027.

Belgian MPs approve police home entry for immigration arrests
The vote came shortly after 5am following an overnight debate, with support from the Arizona majority and Anders. The measure targets people facing enforceable removal who refuse to cooperate and whom authorities have reasonable grounds to consider a public-order or national-security danger; entry is permitted only when less intrusive measures cannot work effectively. Police may also seize documents establishing the arrested person’s identity. Opponents, including lawyers and investigating judges, challenged the vagueness of the security criteria and the implications for constitutional rights.

Brussels Environment ends yellow drought alert after rainfall
Recent rainfall, particularly the storms of 24 October, helped ease the effects of the summer drought. Flows in the main non-navigable waterways are again normal for the season, and Vivaqua has additional production capacity available through its water catchments. The Meuse remains under scrutiny because it supplies the Tailfer production centre.

Uccle residents petition against Bois de Calevoet housing development
Hundreds of residents oppose the project, which could remove century-old trees, and a petition seeks to change its course. They propose building on already paved land or renovating existing properties instead. PS councillor Eric Mercenier argues that Uccle needs social housing and that the site belongs to the regional housing company as land reserved for that purpose.
