Sleep Reawaken With New Lineup | Public Record
Doom metal titans Sleep have returned with a new song, **“Have Spacesuit Will Travel,”**and the announcement of a new comic book from Third Man Books.
But that’s not all that’s new: the band has a new line up. Founding guitarist Matt Pike is gone, as is the band’s most recent drummer, Jason Roederof Neurosis, who replaced original drummer Chris Hakius. In their place, guitarist Bubba Dupree of Void and drummer Dale Crover of MELVINS have joined forces with bassist Al Cisneros, beginning a new era this storied band.
Sleep was formed in San Jose in 1990. In 1992, they released Sleep’s Holy Mountain and in 1999, Dopesmoker. Both albums have become classics in the genre.
After Sleep’s initial dissolution, Cisneros and Hakius formed OM, and Pike started High on Fire. In 2018, Cisneros and Pike reunited Sleep, bringing in Roeder on drums and releasing the Dune-inspired The Sciences on April 20th.
The single version of “Have Space Suit Will Travel” clocks in at, you guessed it, four minutes and 20 seconds. It drops alongside pre-orders for Sleep Comic Book, authored by Cisneros and featuring art by Dave Kloc and Arik Roper——the guy responsible for the legendary Dopesmoker cover. Out in September, Third Man says the comic evokes the glory of Conan the Barbarian, Star Wars, and Marvel’s KISS comics of the ‘70s.
A deluxe edition of the comic features a flexi-disc single, signed bookplate, poster, and yep, rolling papers. What do YOU think of Sleep’s new tune? Drop us a comment and let us know.
