A pet that ages while you're gone

Why a desk pet should decay on wall-clock time, grow on attention only, and write down what it thought about your absence.

Most virtual pets I have kept have had the same flaw: they only exist while you are looking at them.

Close the tab and the animal is suspended, perfectly preserved, a photograph. Come back a month later and it is exactly as you left it — still hungry in the same way, still waiting at the same frame of animation.

That is not what having an animal is like. The whole weight of it — the reason a dog at the door means something — is that time passed while you were elsewhere, and the animal lived through it without you.

Time as the only resource

Grumble computes hunger, rest and mood from wall-clock deltas. Nothing decays because you clicked a button or forgot to; it decays because the earth turned. Nine hours away is nine hours of a small creature’s afternoon, spent on a desk, with opinions accumulating.

The important consequence is that care is not a resource you can grind. You cannot sit down for an hour and buy back a week. The only thing that helps is showing up at the size of a normal human day.

Growth is not a schedule

Five stages, from Grub to Grizmoor. None of them unlock on a day counter, because a calendar is not attention. Each stage is paid for in trust, and trust only comes from pats, snacks, play and focus-timer minutes spent working next to the creature. A neglected pet does not evolve slower — it does not evolve. It just gets older, which is a different and sadder thing.

Why it writes a journal

Because absence needs a witness. The journal is the creature’s account of the hours you missed, in its own voice, with an opinion attached. It is the entire emotional payload of the game, and it is why the return visit matters more than the first one.

It also means the game can be honest without being cruel. The creature is never punished into misery; it is just allowed to have noticed.

What this buys

A reason to visit that is not a notification. No push, no streak guilt, no daily login bonus. Just a creature who will have lived through your absence and will want to discuss it.
