Music Needs Decisions, Not Prompts
- Generated vs. assisted – not the same thing
- Why I built CHORDWERK
- Why this matters more now
- How to get it
Open any streaming platform, search for “ambient study beats” or “melodic dubstep”, and count how long it takes until you hit a track nobody made. A prompt, a click, a thumbnail generated by the same machine. Thirty seconds of listening and you know: there is nothing in there. No reason for the chord change in bar nine. No wrong note that stayed because it felt right. Just the statistical average of a genre.
The problem isn’t that these tracks exist. The problem is that they bury everything else. For every honest producer with an actual idea, there are a thousand uploads that cost nothing to make and nothing to delete. The listener gives up before finding you.
Generated vs. assisted – not the same thing
Before this turns into a rant: I’m not against tools. Every producer uses tools, and some of them are smart. There is a line though, and it matters.
AI-generated means the machine made the musical decisions. The melody, the harmony, the arrangement – a model picked them because they are probable. The human typed a sentence and hit render.
AI-assisted means a human made the decisions and used software to get there faster. Stem separation to pull a vocal out of an old recording. A tuning tool. A chord suggestion you can accept or throw away. The decision is still yours. The track is still yours.
The first produces content. The second produces music. They are not the same, and they shouldn’t be treated the same.
Why I built CHORDWERK
Harmony is where most producers get stuck. You have a melody, a groove, a sound – and then you sit there with a piano roll trying to remember what a borrowed chord is. Most people solve this one of two ways: they google a chord progression and copy it, or they let a generator fill the gap and stop deciding altogether.
I wanted a third option: a tool that shows you your choices and makes you pick.
CHORDWERK is a chord and songwriting plugin (VST3, Audio Unit, standalone) for Mac and Windows. You see your key as a harmony wheel. Click a chord, hear it. Try the substitution next to it, hear that. Build a progression by ear, not by name, then drag it into your DAW as MIDI and do whatever you want with it.
It doesn’t write for you. It doesn’t suggest “the best” progression. It lays out the harmonic room you’re in and lets you walk around. The sadness in a minor-four chord, the lift of a secondary dominant – you hear them, you decide, you own the result.
A few things I cared about:
-
No subscription, no license server, no account. Pay once, it’s yours.
-
Works offline. It sends nothing anywhere.
-
No telemetry, no “cloud features”.
-
English and German interface.
Why this matters more now
When the market is flooded with average, the only thing that stands out is something that isn’t average. And you can’t be not-average by accident – you get there by making decisions a model wouldn’t make, on purpose, and hearing why they work.
A tool that helps you understand harmony makes you a better decision-maker. A tool that makes the decisions for you makes you replaceable by a prompt.
That’s the whole difference, and it’s the reason this plugin exists.
