Magnitude 7 Earthquake Hits China's Tibet, Killing at Least 16: State Media

An earthquake of magnitude 7 struck China’s southwestern region of Tibet at around 10:33 p.m. on Thursday, killing at least 16 people and injuring 32 others, state news agency Xinhua reported, citing Nagqu City’s emergency management bureau. As of 2:25 a.m. on Friday, 11 of the injured were in serious condition while 21 sustained minor injuries, Xinhua reported. Local authorities have found at least two people injured in a village near the epicenter, with some houses in villages closest to the epicenter showing cracks, the state broadcaster said. The quake is the strongest to hit China since January 2024. The actual number of casualties from such events may be much higher as the Chinese regime routinely suppresses or alters information....

Peter Menzies: Immigration Must Be Meticulously Planned

Commentary There’s been a lot of talk lately about immigration as people and provincial governments feel the impacts of Justin Trudeau’s decade as prime minister. Air Canada to Cut 5 More US Destinations Due to Low Demand

Air Canada says it plans to eliminate five routes next summer, including all direct flights to South Carolina, following its earlier cuts to U.S. routes this winter because of weak demand. An Air Canada spokesperson told The Epoch Times that the company regularly reviews its schedule to align flights with customer demand and travel patterns. Following its latest review, the airline “made a commercial decision to adjust some routes next summer.” Those routes include Vancouver to Nashville, Tennessee; Vancouver to Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina; Toronto to Charleston, South Carolina; Montreal to Seattle, Washington; and Toronto’s Billy Bishop Airport to Boston, Massachusetts.

Deadly Fire at CFB Wainwright Started in Automatic Grenade Launcher Range, Military Officials Say

The grass fire that killed four soldiers and injured 39 at CFB Wainwright on Oct. 17 began during routine military training on an automatic grenade launcher range before spreading to another range, military officials say. Brig.-Gen. Vanessa Hanrahan, the Canadian Armed Forces provost marshal, said during a news conference in Edmonton on Oct. 22 that as investigations continue, official would examine decisions made by commanders after the fire started and how personnel responded as it spread. Investigators will also look into whether changes in wind direction were communicated to soldiers training on the other range, she said. “It would be inappropriate for me to speculate now about all of those decisions and any of the other aspects of the investigation,” she said. “Once the investigative team has time to review all the evidence … I’ll be in a better position to provide accurate information as to the outcome of that investigation.”

Doerkson Pins Growth Hopes on Getting Forestry ‘Back to Business’ and LNG Opportunity

Interim British Columbia Conservative leader Lorne Doerkson is partly pinning his hopes on the province’s beleaguered forestry sector to carry his election platform’s forecast of 3.2 percent economic growth. Doerkson says the sector is now in peril but has been a “ginormous contributor” to the province’s economy in the past, and the infrastructure is in place to “absolutely get back to business.” The Conservatives’ growth projections exceed both the NDP’s projections for the province and the Bank of Canada’s national forecasts. They say in their platform for Saturday’s election that GDP growth by 2029-2030 will yield $2.6 billion in new revenue that will help bring down the deficit that has reached record levels under the government of NDP Leader David Eby....

Ottawa Warns Diplomats Not to Meet With US Midterm Candidates

The Canadian government has instructed its diplomats not to meet with or attend events alongside candidates running in the U.S. midterm elections. Rogers to Charge New 1.6% Credit Card Processing Fee on Bills in 2027

Rogers Communications says it will begin charging customers a fee for paying their phone or internet bills by credit card starting next year. The Toronto-based telecommunications company recently announced on its website that it will introduce a 1.6 percent processing fee on credit card payments effective Jan. 17, 2027. Rogers said the fee reflects the charges credit card companies impose on the company when customers pay their bills using credit cards. It added that businesses in many sectors charge similar fees. In an emailed statement, Rogers said credit card processing fees have increased nearly 40 percent since 2020, with the company paying roughly $150 million annually. Rogers noted that customers can avoid the fee by using other payment methods, including direct debit from a bank account, online banking, cheques, Rogers gift cards, prepaid cards, and Visa Debit or Mastercard debit.
