'From the Womb to the Tomb': Thousands of Canadians Gather for Annual Rally in Support of Life

MOOSE JAW, Sask.—With three children under the age of 4, and another on the way, Reagan King brought his young family to “Life Chain” on Oct. 4—one of the country’s largest pro-life demonstrations. The Moose Jaw gathering was one of hundreds of Life Chain events held across Canada, drawing thousands of participants. Now in its 36th year, Campaign Life Coalition introduced the event to Canada in 1991, four years after it began in the United States. King was among about 100 people who participated in the event in Moose Jaw, where demonstrators spent an hour praying and holding signs opposing abortion. Participants also expressed opposition to medical assistance in dying (MAID).

Canadian households may soon face steeper grocery and mortgage prices as a diesel and crude oil price “shock” reverberates across supply chains, according to a new report. A record spike in diesel prices is rippling through the economy, creating inflation pressure that extends well beyond a typical move in crude oil, according to an Oct. 5 report by Olivier Gervais, Scotiabank’s director of modelling and forecasting. Gervais described it as a structural product shortage rather than a standard crude oil supply issue. Ottawa Indefinitely Extends MAID Exclusion for Those Whose Sole Condition Is Mental Illness

The federal government will table legislation to indefinitely exclude people whose sole medical condition is a mental illness from receiving medical assistance in dying (MAID), Justice Minister Sean Fraser announced on Oct. 7. Fraser said the decision reflected the recommendations of a special parliamentary committee on MAID, which recommended that people whose sole underlying medical condition is a mental illness remain excluded from eligibility. “It also reflects the engagement that I’ve had, that my department has had over the course of my time in this particular position. While there is not a perfect consensus on this issue, we believe this is the correct approach at this particular time,” Fraser said....

Canadian Buoy Drifts Across Atlantic, Washes up on Shore of Irish Island

Officials in northwestern Ireland say they’re working to recover a large Canadian buoy that floated across the Atlantic Ocean and washed up on a coastal island. A news release from Mayo County Council says the mariner marker, weighing in at roughly 3.5 tonnes, came ashore on Achill Island, known for its rugged mountains and bright sandy beaches. It says council was told by the Canadian Coast Guard that its buoys, while “very friendly,” have quite the habit of drifting far from home. The council is looking to recover the buoy so as to prevent it from floating away and becoming a hazard to vessels or coastal infrastructure.

Westons to Buy UK Pharmacy Chain Boots for US$8.9B

The family behind Canada’s biggest pharmacy and grocery chains is growing its empire with the acquisition of U.K. drugstore Boots. Weston family holding company Wittington Investments said Wednesday that it will purchase Boots for US$8.9 billion (C$12.7 billion), including debt, from private equity firm Sycamore Partners. Along with Boots’ retail operations in the U.K. and Ireland, Wittington will acquire its operations in Thailand, franchised businesses, its optical division and No7 Beauty Company. Toronto-based holding company Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd. will partner with Wittington on the acquisition and after its closing, expected in the first quarter of 2027, Galen Weston will become Boots’ chairman.
