Mass Arrests in Bid to Stop Clan Violence in Outback Township

More than two dozen men and teenage boys have been arrested in a troubled outback community as police work to end weeks of violent confrontations driven by clan rivalry. Ongoing fighting in Wadeye involving crossbows, spears, axes and machetes has exasperated police amid calls for some residents to be relocated to tribal homelands to reduce clan tensions. Many cars have been torched and police vehicles damaged during brawls involving more than 100 people in the township 395km southwest of Darwin. Extra police have been deployed to Wadeye, where 28 men and teenage boys have been arrested in recent days, the youngest aged 14 and the oldest 42, with police seeking other alleged offenders.

Alberta Announces $143 Million for 476 Classroom ‘Complexity Teams’

Alberta says it will provide nearly 500 elementary schools across the province with “complexity teams” to meet the academic and behavioural needs of students. Classroom complexity was one of the issues raised by teachers during a three-week strike in October. The teachers were ordered back to the classroom after Smith’s government passed the Back to School Act on Oct. 28. Smith and Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides made the funding announcement on Feb. 12, saying the province will commit to spend $143 million on 476 teams, which will be made up of one teacher and two education assistants. The premier said the decision was made after the province gathered data from 1,549 schools, representing 89,000 classrooms, which was compiled into a report and showed class sizes were “significantly higher” in some areas of the province....

Ontario Elementary School Vice Principal Facing Child Exploitation Charges

An elementary school vice principal in Cambridge, Ont., is facing child sexual assault and luring charges. Michel Pleau, 50, was arrested on Feb. 13 following a joint investigation by the Waterloo Regional Police, the Greater Sudbury Police, and the Toronto Police Service. Pleau is facing six charges, including the possession, making, and distribution of child sexual assault and exploitation material; making sexually explicit material available to a child; invitation to sexual touching; and luring a child under 16 years of age. Child sexual abuse and exploitation material was formerly referred to as “child pornography” when making charges. The Waterloo Catholic District School Board said in a statement released Feb. 13 that it was made aware of the arrest by the police.

Tumbler Ridge RCMP received and responded to a report of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School on Southgate St. at 2:20 p.m. Mountain Standard Time (4:20 p.m. EST), according to RCMP Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald. He did not say how many officers attended the initial call. The shooter fired at the officers as they approached the school at 2:22 p.m., McDonald said, adding that he does not believe officers fired back. Once inside the school, officers located one deceased victim in the hallway and five young students dead in the library, McDonald said.

Liberals’ GST Credit Boost Becomes Law After Expedited Review

Legislation to implement the Liberal government’s 25 percent boost to the GST credit has received royal assent and become law, following an expedited passage through the House of Commons. Bill C-19, also known as the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit Act, amends the Income Tax Act to increase the maximum annual GST credit amounts by 25 percent for the following five years. Approximately 12 million Canadians are eligible for the credit. The government estimates that a single senior with $25,000 in net income would receive $950 in the 2026–2027 fiscal year with the credit increase. Meanwhile, a couple with two children and $40,000 in income would receive $1,890 for the 2026-2027 fiscal year.
