Nearly half of Canada’s provinces and territories are calling on the federal Liberals to fulfil their election promise to expand eligibility for a mining exploration tax credit to help smaller mining companies get through their exploration phase. The Liberals’ 2025 election platform said the government would expand the range of activities eligible for mineral exploration tax credits by including the costs of engineering and feasibility studies for critical mineral projects. The Association for Mineral Exploration, which recently launched a campaign to hold the government to its promise, said it’s hoping to that included in the upcoming budget. Nova Scotia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia and Yukon have all written letters in support of the campaign. They say the measure would help projects move from exploration to production....
The Supreme Court of Canada has ruled that judges must “meaningfully consider” traditional indigenous community approaches to justice when sentencing indigenous offenders and said that not doing so can constitute a legal error. The Supreme Court judges were split on the decision, with four dissenting and five in the majority. The ruling came in the context of an appeal in the case of Harry Arthur Cope, an indigenous man convicted for severely assaulting his indigenous girlfriend in 2021, who had his five-year prison sentence reduced to three years by the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal in 2024. Sentencing Circles The Supreme Court upheld the reduced sentence in a 5–4 decision on Oct. 9, holding that the original sentencing judge hadn’t properly taken into account the recommendations by an indigenous sentencing circle or the mental illness of the man in issuing the sentence....
A bill that aims to boost Canada’s ability to sanction foreign individuals involved in corruption and human rights abuses has passed the House of Commons. Bill C-219, entitled the Sergei Magnitsky International Anti-Corruption and Human Rights Act, was introduced in September 2025 by Conservative MP James Bezan, and passed third reading in the House on Oct. 8. It must still pass the Senate and receive royal assent before it becomes law. The bill proposes amendments to the 2017 Justice for Victims of Corrupt Foreign Officials Act (known as the Sergei Magnitsky Act), which was also championed by Bezan, as well as several other federal laws.

British Columbia NDP Leader David Eby is making election campaign pledges of a new training program for international medical graduates and discounted tuition or loan forgiveness for health-care workers willing to move to rural communities. Eby spent Friday in Surrey, at a campaign stop at the site for a new medical school, while B.C. Conservative interim leader Lorne Doerkson was in Coquitlam laying out his promises for seniors, which include giving those waiting for long-term care beds “portable public funding” so they can pick where they want to be, including in non-government facilities. Eby said if the New Democrats are elected on Oct. 24, the new medical school at Simon Fraser University will offer a first-of-its-kind “bridging to practice” training for qualified foreign graduates already living in the province but who are unable to practice family medicine because of a lack of residency spots.
