CBSA Deports Former Iranian Official After Judge Rejects Appeal
Syed Salman Samani, Iran's former deputy minister in the Ministry of Interior, has been in Canada since 2021 and was ordered deported in 2024.
The Canada Border Services Agency has deported a senior Iranian official, Syed Salman Samani, after a Federal Court judge dismissed his appeal to halt removal. Justice Sébastien Grammond found Samani, a former deputy minister and spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Interior, wielded significant power and publically defended the government’s actions during the 2019 “Bloody November” crackdown, where ministry-overseen police forces killed civilians and committed human rights abuses. Samani’s ministry oversaw police forces responsible for these abuses, and as spokesperson, he defended the government’s conduct and threatened dissenting politicians.
