US and NZ Commit $60 Million to Cook Islands Port Amid Pacific Rivalry With CCP
After signing a comprehensive strategic partnership with Beijing last year the small Pacific state has taken another step back towards its traditional partners.
The United States and New Zealand have pledged a combined US$60 million to upgrade the port on Penrhyn atoll in the Cook Islands. This initiative is designed to enhance shipping connections for the nation’s outer islands and facilitate the development of deep-sea mineral mining. The funding is split, with the U.S. contributing US$50 million and New Zealand providing about US$10 million.
