HiveTalk Grows Up: A New Way to Pay for Video Rooms

HiveTalk started as an accident. Discord was broken — again — and in frustration I threw up my own video-call server instead. The first version was simple: a small video server with Bitcoin payments and Nostr sign-on bolted on. “Nothing fancy, nothing super special.” Then people showed up. Thousands of them in the first year — on a server that could only hold a hundred people at a time.

That was 2024. A lot has changed since, and two long podcast conversations this month — Open Markets Podcast #15, “Bitkarrot Tea” and Fundamentals of Fundamentals, “Building HiveTalk w/ Karrot” — are the best window yet into where the project has been and where it’s going. This is the first of nine posts distilling those conversations.

What’s new: paid plans and “make it yours” video rooms

The big news: HiveTalk is changing shape. The free version isn’t going anywhere — it stays free and community-funded. But a new option is arriving in mid-September for people who want more:

• Make it yours. Don’t like where the buttons are? Want your own colors, your own branding? Have AI build it for you — and plug it into HiveTalk’s Nostr Relay. As I put it: “I can’t satisfy all you guys…but now you can build your front end, mobile app or integrate it into your website without any hivetalk branding, custom suited to your group’s needs, whether it be a local meetup or a special interest group, now you don’t have to switch apps”
• Recording built in. Want to record your calls without fiddling with OBS or extra software? It’s now a feature — an mp4 file recording of the whole room, ready when you are. One click to record and save, then when your call is over find the download in the hivetalk dashboard.
• Two simple plans. The standard plan allows you to create your own vibe coded front end, recording, and three permanent rooms. The pro plan does the same but gives you up to ten rooms with recordings kept for six months. Early buyers get a deep discount. → Subscribe here

The idea behind the change: in 2026, anyone can ask an AI to build them a nice-looking video app in an afternoon. The hard part isn’t the looks — it’s running the reliable, secure machinery behind it that can hold a thousand people. That’s what HiveTalk now sells: you bring the look, I provide the engine.

Payments should be easy

One more thing worth knowing: the payments side uses a simple internet standard (L402) on the Nostr Relay for “this costs money, pay to continue” — think of it as a paywall that speaks Bitcoin lightning instead of asking for a credit card. Frictionless payments in near real time, and also not just human friendly but also AI Agent ready.

Big companies are currently fighting over their own version of this built on stablecoins; I went with Bitcoin’s Lightning network because it’s open, works everywhere, and doesn’t require asking anyone’s permission. Or as what Eric FJ said about the corporate alternative (x402): “They can’t even decide which coin or which blockchain they’re going to use.”
