Poilievre Urges Feds Not to Reinstate Gas Excise Tax in September
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is urging the federal government not to reinstate the federal fuel excise tax on gasoline and diesel when the temporary suspension expires on Sept. 7. “I am officially calling on Mark Carney to cancel his planned gas tax hike in September. Canadians cannot afford yet another 10 cents a litre at the pump,” Poilievre said during a press conference in St. John’s, Nfld., on Aug. 6. The Conservative leader also repeated his call for the government to end all taxes on gasoline and diesel for the remainder of the year. The Tories estimate the measure would save Canadians about $20 per tank of gas, while a family of four would save roughly $500 over the rest of the year.

Evacuations Expand South on Okanagan Lake, as More Mexican Fire Crews Arrive in BC
The wildfire evacuation zone along the shores of Okanagan Lake in British Columbia’s Interior expanded south on Thursday, with emergency crews guiding people away from a complex of blazes in the area where hundreds of homes were destroyed last weekend. An update from the Central Okanagan emergency management centre on Thursday said upgraded evacuation orders applied to two dozen properties along Westside Road in the Shelter Cove, Secret Point and Cinnabar Creek areas on the western side of the lake. The latest orders mean more than 2,600 people have been forced out of their homes due to the out-of-control Quilpituk Creek fire. That’s in addition to those forced out by the Bradley Creek blaze further north along the lake in the Regional District of North Okanagan and the Okanagan Indian Band reserve, where neighbourhoods were incinerated and at least 230 homes were destroyed on Saturday....
