Direct, Not Intermediated

I’ve started setting up direct book purchases on mycontinuum.xyz.
The prices are the same as Amazon. That’s intentional.
This isn’t about undercutting a platform or trying to optimize for margin. It’s not about competing on price, gaming distribution channels, or attempting to “pull people away” from where they are already comfortable.
It’s about something much simpler.
Direct relationships.
When someone buys a book through Amazon, the process is seamless. It is optimized for speed and efficiency. The system works exactly as expected: search, click, purchase, deliver.
There is almost no friction.
But there is also almost no relationship.
The transaction is clean, but abstracted. The author does not know who the reader is. The reader does not interact with the author. The entire exchange is mediated through a system designed to remove all unnecessary interaction.
From a scaling perspective, that makes sense.
From a human perspective, something is missing.
That missing piece is not immediately obvious because the system works so well. It fulfills its purpose. It delivers the product. It completes the transaction.
But it reduces the interaction to a purely economic event.
With direct purchase, the shape of the interaction changes.
Someone reads the work.
They decide it has value.
They take a step that is not just a click, but a form of reaching out.
A response comes back.
The book is delivered.
There is a thread that connects those steps.
It is not hidden behind a platform.
It is not abstracted into a report.
It is visible.
That visibility changes the nature of the exchange.
It is no longer just:
product → payment → fulfillment
It becomes:
work → recognition → response → delivery
That may seem like a subtle shift, but it has real consequences.
For the reader, it introduces intentionality. They are not just clicking “Buy Now.” They are making a decision that involves a small amount of effort and attention.
For the author, it creates awareness. This is not a number in a dashboard. It is a person who chose to engage directly.
That does not scale in the same way.
And that’s the point.
Not everything needs to scale.
There is a difference between what is efficient and what is meaningful.
Modern systems are optimized for efficiency. They remove friction, compress time, and abstract relationships into processes that can be repeated at scale.
That has enormous advantages.
But it also changes how we experience interaction.
When everything is mediated, the direct connection disappears.
Continuum is built on a similar idea.
Own your identity, and writing Own the act of publishing.
Not because intermediaries are inherently bad, but because they reshape the relationship between creator and audience.
When your identity is controlled by a platform, you are operating within its boundaries.
When your writing lives inside a platform, it exists under its rules.
When your publishing depends on a system you don’t control, your voice is subject to conditions you didn’t define.
That doesn’t make those systems evil.
It makes them central.
And anything that is central becomes a dependency.
Direct interaction reduces that dependency.
It doesn’t eliminate platforms entirely. You can still use them. You can still distribute through them. But they are no longer the only path.
They become one option among many.
That’s an important distinction.
The direct purchase flow is a small expression of that idea.
It says:
You can buy this book through Amazon.
Or you can buy it directly.
Both paths exist.
Neither is forced.
That mirrors the broader philosophy behind Continuum.
You can publish through platforms.
Or you can publish directly.
You can rely on centralized identity systems.
Or you can manage your own.
You can accept the default model.
Or you can step outside it.
The direct path introduces a small amount of friction.
You have to fill out a form.
You have to wait for a response.
You have to complete the transaction manually.
In most systems, that friction would be considered a flaw.
Here, it serves a purpose.
It slows the interaction down just enough to make it real.
It creates space for awareness.
It turns a transaction into an exchange.
There is also a trust component.
With a platform, trust is outsourced. You trust the system to handle the transaction, deliver the product, and manage the process.
With direct interaction, trust is between people.
The reader trusts that the author will deliver.
The author trusts that the reader will follow through.
That trust is not guaranteed. It has to be earned. It has to be maintained.
But when it exists, it is stronger than trust in a system, because it is not abstract.
It is specific, personal and accountable.
The direct purchase flow is not meant to replace existing platforms.
It is meant to exist alongside them.
To provide an alternative path.
To demonstrate that not every interaction needs to be mediated.
And to reinforce the idea that ownership and connection are linked.
If you own your work, you should be able to distribute it directly.
If someone values that work, they should be able to support it without going through a system that absorbs the relationship.
This is a small step in that direction.
It is not a complete solution.
It is not optimized.
It does not scale effortlessly.
But it is aligned.
And for now, that matters more.
