A Man’s Word Is Worth More Than Any Contract
Ascolta bene! Reputation and respect are the pillars of a good business. In the world of business, the one who promises and fails to deliver turns his own words into poison with which he will inevitably choke.
When a promise is made, trust is placed in the person—much like a goldsmith who receives a nugget of gold to melt and shape into a ring. No matter the size of the commitment, whether small as a grain of sand or vast as the sea, it is your duty to honor the word you have given. Otherwise, trust will be completely lost.
Not only in business, but in every aspect of life, trust is intrinsically tied to promises. When someone fails to fulfill their part of an agreement, that trust is irreparably broken. Trust does not arise from nothing; it is a quality arduously earned and easily destroyed.
A man who rushes to make promises is destined for failure and the ruin of his own reputation. To gain respect and achieve honor in any field of business, one must cultivate a character of extraordinary credibility. In a negotiation, fulfill your word in such a way that, once spoken, it is considered as good as already done.
Many will promise actions, conduct, and things that are impossible to achieve in order to deceive you. Making a promise is easy—it only requires a tongue. However, honoring one’s word demands courage and determination.
Respect is a two-way street. The only way to demand it is to offer it first.
No one respects a man simply because he wishes to be respected; respect cannot be imposed. To earn respect, one must maintain a consistent conduct of honor and good reputation.
Respect and trust are built upon the solid foundation of consistent actions and fulfilled promises. A man’s word must be as solid as a rock—unshakable and worthy of trust. Otherwise, he becomes vulnerable, and his credibility slips away like sand through his fingers.
