The problem is not hypothetical. Back in 2009, Haug and Wedekind examined publicly funded e-learning projects — roughly 300 million euros of funding volume — and found that almost half of them could no longer be found once their funding had ended. Publicly financed content, locked into publicly financed silos, gone when the project money runs out. That is the actual sustainability record of the platform approach.
