On Steam and Ownership
Personal Thoughts on Ownership
08.22.26
As I’ve been approaching a few important milestones in my life I have to look back at the last decade I’ve spent online, a place many of us have chosen to use our valuable time one, and how I often tell myself I have no regrets. This last statement simply isn’t true though, just something I tell myself to avoid facing the reality that I have spent thousands on games I’ll hardly ever play.
The part that hurts, however, IS the lack of ownership; Specifically, that I am unable to pass down that which I might not be able to enjoy. It is like wasting time, except I pay for the pleasure. There are things I have donated to, on platforms like Kickstarter and Patreon, and enjoy their benefits or at least appreciate the aesthetic (Friday Night Funkin, Muffin Time, Calamity Jane), but the purest hope is that I might share my love of the culture I grew up with, with my children. Steam seems hellbent on reducing this love of history to buying a second copy for one’s children.
I am certain this is good from a business perspective, but I ultimately believe that this will be a tragically poor long term decision as many people won’t be able to share the hobby.
Long story, short. I plan on buying on GOG and physical where-ever possible to create a sense of genuine connection and mindfulness for myself.
