A Civilization Is Measured by How It Treats the Vulnerable

Commentary Over the last few weeks, tens of thousands of Canadians gathered in major cities across the country for the National March for Life and related pro-life events. Participants marched in Ottawa, Victoria, Edmonton, Regina, Toronto, Halifax, and elsewhere in what organizers describe as a peaceful public witness in support of legal protection for human life from conception to natural death. Speakers addressed concerns surrounding abortion, euthanasia (MAID), disability, and the growing vulnerability of those increasingly seen by society as burdensome, inconvenient, or expendable. One of the speakers in Ottawa was Alex Schadenberg, executive director of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition. Coverage of the annual march once again revealed a growing divide in how Canadians receive information, an example being the event in Ottawa. Independent news outlets and on-the-ground reporting described thousands gathered on Parliament Hill and filling the downtown streets, yet much of the state-funded and mainstream media coverage remained sparse, muted, or largely dismissive of the scale and concerns expressed by attendees....

Ontario Liberal Party Dismisses Erskine-Smith’s Appeal of Nomination Loss

The Ontario Liberal Party has dismissed the appeal of MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith concerning his nomination contest loss earlier this month. Erskine-Smith had been seeking the provincial Liberals’ nomination in the upcoming Scarborough Southwest byelection as a possible launchpad for a party leadership bid, but lost the contest to businessman Ahsanul Hafiz on May 9. The Toronto-area MP told reporters later that day that he had been defeated by a narrow margin of 19 votes. He appealed to the party’s arbitration panel on May 12, alleging irregularities in the vote, including claims that 34 more ballots were counted than the number of recorded voters and that some people who could not provide their address or said they lost their driver’s licence were allowed to vote.

Building Under Construction in Philippines Collapses, Leaving 1 Dead and 21 Trapped

ANGELES, Philippines—A nine-story building under construction in a city north of the Philippine capital collapsed before dawn on Sunday, leaving at least one Malaysian tourist dead and at least 21 mostly workers trapped in the rubble, officials said. Two were located alive but could not be immediately extricated. At least 24 workers either managed to dash out of the building, where they mostly slept on the ground floor, or were rescued after the it crumbled to the ground around 2:30 a.m. in a crowded neighborhood of budget hotels, cafes, spas and rural houses outside a former U.S. Air Force base, officials said.

Huge Grievance Pushes One Nation to Major Status

Australia’s major political parties face a “huge amount of grievance” as a leading Liberal figure concedes his party’s decade of flawed policies has helped fuel the rise of One Nation. Polling from RedBridge Group and Accent Research shows Pauline Hanson’s One Nation could win up to 59 lower house seats if a federal election were held today. The result would leave Senator Hanson’s anti-immigration party as the official opposition, reducing the coalition to a handful of seats and forcing Labor into minority government.
