The Roman Catholic Military Ordinariate of Canada says the military’s prayer ban at official events undermines the principle of state neutrality on religion and may violate the Charter in several ways, including by requiring chaplains to avoid mentioning God or using faith-specific language when delivering mandatory “spiritual reflections.” The concerns were noted in a recent statement by Bishop Scott McCaig, who serves as Military Ordinary of Canada, the authority that oversees Catholic ministry and spiritual needs in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). McCaig said discussions are taking place with the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops as well as other interfaith partners before the Ordinariate issues a formal position. Build Canada Homes’ inaugural board chair Evan Siddall was CEO of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. from late 2013 to 2021, where he helped to develop the Liberals’ national housing strategy. Siddall was most recently vice-chair at BMO Capital Markets and his experience includes heading up Alberta’s AIMCo pension fund manager and stints at Goldman Sachs and Irving Oil. The incoming chair also served for a number of years as special adviser to Carney when he was governor of the Bank of Canada.

Canadian Military on Standby to Help as BC Wildfire Losses Mount and Thousands Flee
The Canadian Armed Forces are on standby to help the wildfire situation that deteriorated rapidly over the weekend in British Columbia’s Okanagan region, where one person has died, thousands have been evacuated and there’s been extensive property destruction. Defence Minister David McGuinty says B.C. sent a request for assistance to Emergency Management Minister Eleanor Olszewski over the weekend, and she approved federal help with shelter and accommodation. McGuinty says that while the province hasn’t formally asked for military help, the Canadian Armed Forces are in “direct, constant contact” with the B.C. government and Ottawa. He says the military is ready the moment it receives a formal request to act, and the situation was being assessed “hour by hour.”
