Federal Gas Tax Holiday Extended Until January 2027

The federal government is extending its suspension of the excise tax on gasoline and diesel until early 2027, after the tax holiday was set to expire on Sept. 7. The federal fuel excise tax will remain suspended until Jan. 31, 2027, before being reinstated at half its regular rate from Feb. 1 to March 31. It will return to its full rate on April 1.

Rabies Vaccine Operation Targets Raccoons and Skunks in Montreal Parks

Teams of workers will be spreading sweet-smelling baits containing a rabies vaccine through Montreal’s parks in the coming weeks, as the province battles the biggest outbreak of raccoon rabies in its history. Marianne Gagnier, a biologist with the province’s Environment Department, says Montreal is the final stop of a vaccine blitz that has seen more than 800,000 vaccine baits distributed in more than 110 communities throughout the Estrie, Montérégie and Centre-du-Québec regions to the south and east of the city. “The goal of this vaccination is to immunize raccoons against rabies, but it’s ultimately to protect human health,” she said Wednesday in a phone interview....

Bank of Canada Holds Key Rate at 2.25 Percent, Says Higher Inflation Risks Have Increased

OTTAWA—The Bank of Canada has held its key interest rate steady at 2.25 percent for a seventh consecutive meeting, while warning that higher oil prices and tariffs are putting increased upward pressure on inflation. “The longer oil prices and refinery margins stay high, the greater the risk that higher energy prices spill over and turn into persistent inflation. In addition, the new U.S. tariffs and the Canadian counter-tariffs could add costs for some businesses and feed into consumer prices over time,” Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem told reporters in Ottawa on Sept. 2. Macklem said recent economic data had been largely in line with the Bank’s July forecast, leading it to maintain the interest rate at 2.25 percent. However, he said the “upside risks” to inflation had increased and that the Bank would adjust monetary policy as needed....
